Phthalates are endocrine disrupters found in prepared and packaged foods and personal care products. that have been linked to asthma, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, breast cancer, obesity, type II diabetes, low IQ, neurodevelopmental issues, behavioral issues, autism spectrum disorders, altered reproductive development and male fertility issues. Not to mention man-boobs (I find this one motivates men more than disease).
It is worst for adolescents, with teenagers who had dined out showing up to a 55 percent higher level of phthalates compared to those who only ate at home.
The worst foods are cheeseburgers and sandwiches, but only if they were purchased in a fast-food outlet, restaurant, or cafeteria.
Many everyday products used in the food industry contain phthalates (which are what makes plastic flexible and are also used in personal care products and cleansers), including takeaway containers, gloves used in handling food, and food-processing equipment. Phthalates can leach from plastic containers or wrapping into food. This includes in the home–especially if you ever put plastic in the microwave. It also applies to water in plastic bottles.
Obviously, if you eat at a farm-to-table type restaurant that is not likely to use pre-packaged foods and mircowaves in the kitchen, this risk is not increased. This applies more the chain restaurants, bars, and fast food that are not cooking from scratch
